Özellikle savunma sanayinde kullanılan Amerika Birleşik Devletleri (ABD) üretimi birçok cihaz veya sistem isimleri çeşitli harf kombinasyonlarından oluşur. Aslında bu kısaltmalar o cihaz veya sistemin isminden çok ne işe yaradığını anlatır bize.
Gizlilik içermeyen elektronik sistemlerinin isimlendirme kıl (Joint Electronics Type Designation System) 2. Dünya Savaşı sırasında Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Savaş Dairesi tarafından geliştirilmiştir. Önceki adı Joint Army-Navy Nomenclature System olan kılavuzdaki cihazlar ve sistemler AN sistem olarak da bilinir. JETDS MIL-STD-196’da (MIL-STD: Military Standard) detaylandırılmıştır.
JETDS sistemine göre her cihaz ya da sistem AN/ ile başlar, daha sonra 3 harf, tire işareti, bir sayı ve gerekirse bir harf ile sembolize edilir. Herhangi bir cihaz için sayılar sırayla verildiğinden daha büyük sayıya sahip olan cihaz yakın dönemde üretilmiş daha modern cihaz anlamına gelir.

“(V)” sembolü değiştirilebilir parçalardan oluşan cihazları temsil eder.
“(V)”harfinden sonra gelen rakam cihazın belirli bir versiyonunu gösterir.
Eğitim için kullanılan cihazlar için “T” sembolü kullanılır.
Örneğin; AN/APQ-13-T2 gibi.
